Golf Odyssey: CordeValle Highly Recommended

California's high-tech Silicon Valley may not conjure instant associations of ne golf, but if you are seeking a game in the Bay Area, or even better, looking to round out a trip to Pebble Beach and the Monterey Peninsula, CordeValle is a highly recommended short-term base. €is boutique resort, which hosts the PGA Tour's Frys.com Open in early October on its ne Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed eighteen, enjoys a scenic golden-tinted setting at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Course Review: CordeValle

Even though we claim to try to review courses that the average joe can go play, I will not try to defend reviewing CordeValle. Spoiler: This is a favorable review. I will preface the review with an apology: I was so wrapped up in the experience that I forgot to take pictures. Read more

Tiger Woods Doesn't Need Another Long Layoff

David Barrett: TheAPosition

It's been a strange year for Tiger Woods. Not quite as strange as 2009 or 2010, but not the back to normal year we expected.

By "normal," I don't mean that we expected Woods to dominate the game the way he used to. But it was a year when we figured to find out what his new normal was. The verdict would be in on ... Read more

Eat Play Love: The Search for Gracious Leisure at CordeValle

Jay Stuller: TheAPosition

First light comes early only a week after the summer solstice. In a secluded Northern California valley, where hillsides are swathed with golden wild grasses and studded by old and gnarled coast live and blue oak trees, the deep pink and blue glow is accompanied by a growing cacophony of chirps, cheeps and squawks, from happily feeding starlings, magpies and crows. At a distance comes ... Read more

Pasatiempo and CordeValle: Double Delight

James A. Frank: TheAPosition

Someone had a great idea. Create a package that lets you play two really good courses that couldn't be more fun or more different, and are only 25 miles apart. You have to go to California to do it, but trust me: It's worth the trip. The two courses are Pasatiempo and CordeValle, both on Golf Digest's list of Top 100 public tracks, and both in the ... Hobnobbing and Raising Coin: The Tour Pro-Am

Ken Van Vechten: TheAPosition

Eagle Katsina. Wolf Katsina. Deer Katsina. I want it. Wait a minute. Joe's third in line. What the heck is that fourth one, Hairless Chihuahua Katsina? So I did it. I reached over and put a bear-lock on my buddy Joe in the guise of another congratulatory hug for a job done well, and then I casually spun him back to where I was seconds before. ... Read more

Course Review: CordeValle, San Martin, California

Bob Fagan: TheAPosition

"Peaceful and secluded, yet convenient" would be my first words to describe one of Northern California's newest and most elite golf resort properties, CordeValle. - a Rosewood Resort. "Relaxed service and great golf" would be my next comment. CordeValle derives its name from the Spanish phrase "el corazón del valle," meaning "heart of the valley." True to its name, this getaway resort is nestled in a ... Read more

Rocco's Remarkable Turnaround

David Barrett: TheAPosition

What transpired on the 17th hole at CordeValle in the Frys.com Classic on Sunday was one of the most dramatic—and unlikely—turnarounds ever on the PGA Tour. Rocco Mediate and Bo Van Pelt were tied for the lead. Van Pelt drove the green on the short par four, playing at 288 yards that day, his ball coming to rest 19 feet, 10 inches from the hole. ... Fine Fall Venues

David Barrett: TheAPosition

The PGA Tour's Fall Series flies under the radar. With the FedExCup and Ryder Cup behind us and football on center stage in the sports world, the remaining PGA Tour events don't receive much attention. For the die-hard golf fan, though, the Fall Series holds plenty of appeal. There's the lives-on-the-line aspect of the players near the line of 125th on the money list to ... Read more

Going Sideways on the Left Coast

Tom Bedell: TheAPosition

There's something entirely too benign about California weather that northeastern folk like me are well to be wary of. The very air is suspiciously different. San Martin is in the central coast area of the state, about a half-hour south of San Jose and 45 minutes north of the Monterey Peninsula, and in April there is a languorous, zephyr-like quality to the breeze that bespeaks ... Private and First Class, Cordevalle captured the moment

Brad King: TheAPosition

Cypress Point in the morning, Pebble Beach in the afternoon. It was one of those dream golf days at the end of a memorable family vacation to Northern California. But the best part of the trip occurred on our drive back from Monterey Peninsula to the San Francisco Airport, when we spent our final evening at CordeValle, a cloistered retreat nestled among the arresting California ...
